Rules To Post By And Guidelines For Members, Vendors and Pro Haunts

A few folks have asked for some clarity about what they can post. Rather than write some overbearing set of rules and by-laws, let me share the concept behind this network and trust it to you to abide by the spirit of it.

Think of the GoE Network as a laid back art gallery; open to all artists whose passion is creating Halloween props and related items like custom costumes, paintings etc. The gallery is a meeting place as well. It allows us to admire the work of our peers, offer praise, advice and share knowledge in the form of how-to info. I’m assuming the gallery also has a dingy bar and a juke full of good tunes in the back, but I digress…

To further the analogy, the Photos and Videos sections are our exhibition rooms. You wouldn’t expect to go to an opening, walk through an artist’s exhibition and stumble on a picture of the artist’s girlfriend would you?

I would think no. Then again I don’t know s**t about art.

But, if you were invited into the artists home, that wouldn’t surprise you at all. See, that’s what your profile is. It’s your home here. Point being, the Photos and Videos section need to remain on-topic. They are our gallery, not our homes. In case your wondering, how do you know if your adding your pictures to the public Photos section? You're using the "Add Photos" link.

Fear not! Showing pictures of loved ones and outside interests is a social thing, and this is a social network. So posting off topic pictures is fine, so long as they are not in the Photos or Videos sections.

You have two ways to accomplish this:

1. Put them in a blog post using the add image icon on the text box menu (more on this in a second).
2. [Preferably] Post them in the general-purpose box of your home page, again using the add image icon (and again more on this below).

One other *very *important point, please if at all possible, use an image host to post your off topic pictures. Those of you web savvy folks know what I mean. This saves us storage space, which is a real concern as we grow. Also when posting videos please host them on YouTube first, and then post them to the Videos section via the “add stream” option (using the embed code YouTube provides). Again, this saves us a ton of space.

Just as a quick aside there will be one noted exception to the posting rule, mainly in the form of allowing our featured suppliers to showcase their products in the Photos and Videos section. You will never see a product showcased in that section unless we expressly gave permission, and trust the company due to a history of positive transactions with them.

Some other things worth mentioning:

Image based comments - Please don't. Frankly I think we're all grown ups here and would much rather see someone take the time to write a sentence rather than spam our profile page with a sparkly picture of strawberry goth-cake.

Respect for other members - This is a no drama zone. I don’t care if someone just posted that your Mom left her fishnet stockings, whip cream and cattle prod over their house. If you reply publicly, you’re just as guilty. The mods will deal with the drama starter, do not reply, and don’t reply on behalf of someone. Feel free to shoot me a message, and we’ll deal with it. A-holes are like Gremlins, only it doesn’t matter what time you feed them. The second you reply it cascades into a big mess.

And I can promise you if I ever have an issue with a member it will never be handled publicly. It’s a simple matter of respect, and I hope everyone will act in the same manner. If it’s contentious in any way, take it off-line and off the network.

Vendors - Contact me before you post or create a profile. My email is at the bottom of this post.

Pro-Haunts - We love you. But there are two requirements you must meet before you can promote your attraction:

1. You have to post pictures of some props in your haunt, and please fill us in on how you created them.
2. You have to give some type of discount to GoE members. Even if it’s just a few bucks.

That about covers it, thanks for reading all this. Now lets get back to making stuff.

FYI – all comments good or bad will be deleted from this post, so please send me a private message if you have any questions.
