A different type of circus inspiration

(per request by Pete)

Kari and I went to Barnum and Bailey's circus last night and had a blast. This one part of the show had this bizarre, Cirque de Soliel-feeling jungle theme going that had the clowns all carrying around these UV reactive giant flowers and such and I got a moment of haunt inspiration from this. I leaned over to Kari and asked, "Is it wrong that this just gave me a strange haunt idea?"

She rolled her eyes. LOL!

Anyway, I have no way to ever pull this off or the storage space for a completely difernt second haunt theme, but I offer it for consideration just the same. Picture a bunch of large, exotic looking plants, vines and such all (kind of a semi-swampy jungle-ish look) creatively lit in haunt style, probably heavy on blacklight use. Throw in some suitable ambient sounds of crickets, tree frogs and the like. Now think nature gone awry with a malevolent twist. As the TOTs enter this jungle of exotic plants, they start coming to life. Other creepy things emerging form the darkness under the plants and so on. The beautiful plants housing bizarre, evil-looking creatures (you'd almost certainly need actors and some serious costumes for this) that then move in on the unsuspecting crowd.

This is what came to me amidst the laughs and bites of cotton candy last night. Gawd damn I love haunt season! :D

That sounds very similar to what I want to do with the Perkins Restaurant I'm haunting again this year. (Yes you heard right... my manager actually lets me decorate the restaurant... with a LOT of stipulations what I can and can't do coming from her and her boss higher up.)

Anyways,... I've done a sort of "dead" forest theme for the past few years but this year I'm spicing it up with a dash of "Little Shop of Horrors". Mainly I'm doing this by adding vines where I can get away with it around the dining rooms. More specifically I'm wrapping the chains on the hanging lights with vines, wrapping the lamp shades with fabric to give them a hanging bloom sort of look, and replacing the bulb with a CFL style blacklight bulb. :-D Plus add various plants on the knickknack shelves and in the window boxes with eyeballs and teeth giving people the creeps. If I had the time and resources this year I was thinking about doing like the Gholdie's Toxic Waste barrel design... only use it as a fountain... "leaking glowing toxic water" into the plants... and then actually route clear vinyl tubing with highlighter water wrapped in vines to give "plants with toxic sap" kinda look.

LOL! MY manager has equal parts anticipation and fear at what I'll come up with next...
