Figured out the mechanics for my pirate swordfight. Hooray for reindeer motors.

This has me thinking my gravedigger should wave. Doh! Now I have something else to build. I need to run out and get more PVC.

If ya get stuck for a motor that works in exactly the same way as the reindeer one try a fan motor the oscilating part of the motor (see my coffin lid) in operation hope this helps.

Brian - I just noticed the treasure chest. I have that one too! Introduced me to the availability of replacement motors. The little kids are always trying to pull up the lid faster to see the skeleton and I thought I'd have to either trash it or replace the motor last year. Managed to fix it last week and I'm definitely putting some fence up this year.

I like the idea of the side-to-side motion, Brian. Very cool. I'll keep it in mind when I set up the second pirate. Know what you mean about the speed of the motors - I'm thinking of adding a strobe light to the fight scene to give it the illusion of faster movement. I thought about using wiper motors, but the reindeer motors are so much lighter. And the mechanism that reverses the rotation when the load is a little much or the arm gets stuck seems like it will be handy.

Glad to see you cam up with a solution. I did it a little different with our fighting pirates. I ran a bolt with a nut on each end through the arm to the shoulder to give it a full range of motion. The just mounted the reindeer motor to the skelly. 1 motor mounted vertical on 1. And the other horizontal on the other. 1 skelly's arm went up and down and the other side to side. Wish the motors were a little faster but it worked well.
